How To Understand Website Hosting

Whether you're a growing business planning on starting a website business or just a website programmer looking for a good hosting account, its a good idea to learn how web hosting works to ensure that your website launch goes smoothly.

There are many website hosting companies on the internet, and all of them offer a different list of services for different types of websites. Here are some of the common features that you'll see on most web hosts and how to decipher them.

Website Space: Website space is the actual location of where your website files and images reside. Your HTML web pages and even your web programming pages will be stored at this location. Some web hosts offer 100MB and others offer up to 10,000MB or more.

If your company's website only uses up five to seven pages then even 100mb might be too much space because almost all average web pages take up very little space.

If your website is content based and requires tons of images, text, articles, videos, then you should ensure that your host has more then 100mb of web space. Many times though web space will not be a major factor when searching for a web host. Most hosts will provide you with a lot web space for the average website.

Bandwidth / Traffic / Monthly Transfer: Bandwidth is how much information can be transferred from your website.

Think of it this way. If you have 1 web page which takes up 1mb and you're monthly bandwidth limit is 100mb. This means that once 100 people visit your website, then your bandwidth limit will be maxed out. You will not have any bandwidth available until the next month. Most of the time though website hosts offer monthly bandwidth limits of 3,000 MB or 10,000 MB. Don't worry about bandwidth because 99 percent of your web pages won't take up 1mb.

Once you start generating thousands of visitors monthly and see your bandwidth increase then you may have to pay additional fee for that month for the extra bandwidth, and consider upgrading your hosting account. As with website space bandwidth should not be an issue when searching for a web host because most will provide you with adequate bandwidth for your website.

Website Programming Language: If you have features like Comments Form - to email comments directly from visitors to online email account, Newsletter Opt-in for your visitors or any other dynamic features then you need to have support for a web programming language. There are several web programming languages. To find out which one you need for your website ask your website development team and find out. They might already know which programming language they plan on using for your website. Common Web Programming languages include PHP, Net and CFML.

Web Programming language will be a big factor when searching for a web host because each firm will offer a different combination of support for web programming languages, so pick carefully.

Database: If your website needs to store visitor's email address, name and other important information, or keep a catalog of all your products then you will need to use a database. Some of the most common databases that are widely used include Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and Access. Almost all hosting plans will provide support for at least one of these databases. As for web programming, you need to ask your website development team which database they plan to use.

Domain Hosting: Most of the time though a website hosting company will allow you to host one domain name such as a com, or net, but some website hosts support hosting for several website name. This is a great feature because this allows you to host multiple websites on one host, and manage everything from a convenient place. The downside is that you will have to share your website space, your bandwidth, and maybe even several other features with your other website. If you're goal is to have more then one website then it's a good idea to find out exactly how many domains your web host allows on your account.

Email: Email should not be an issue when searching for a web host. Many web hosting firms support some type of email account which allows you to have an email address with your website name: sales at yourwebsitename or something like that. Remember the amount of website space you use for your email may be limited to your overall website account, so if possible delete large and unwanted emails.

Customer Support: Support won't be a factor until it becomes one. This is why its a good idea to speak with a hosting staff and see how they respond. Great customer service will become a very important factor, and usually up to your website firm that will be working with them.

So how do you decide which web host is right for you?

A good method is to first find out which of these website hosting is more important for you. If your website offers business training videos that takes up a lot of bandwidth then you should find a website host that can provide you a lot of bandwidth unless you'd rather wait until it turns into a bottleneck. Videos often take up hundreds if not thousand times more bandwidth then regular webpage and in this case your first priority during your search should be to ensure that your host includes adequate bandwidth. If you find a host that you like and if bandwidth does turn into an issue then make sure that the hosting firm allows the ability to upgrade your hosting services. Be prepared and make sure to find out the expenses for the upgraded plan.

Once you find a good host try hosting your website on a monthly basis instead of the long term discounted plans. Just like other companies, firms will offer lower price to motivate you to buy long term contracts. There's nothing wrong with having a long term contract, but it's not worth it if you decide you don't like this host, or if you find a better host.

If none of those plans sound right or if you plan on creating a gateway type website, with tons of content, images, videos, and if you want to be able to install your own custom software then there's another option for you, a dedicated server. With a dedicated server you can install your own software, support for your own choice of programming languages, and as the title suggests it is dedicated for your website or websites depending on what you need. The cost is usually 8 to 10 times more then your average web host, but it allows you more control and provide you more ways to customize it. And if you plan on hosting dozens of websites then you should consider using a dedicated server.

How to Keep Expired Domain Links

Many people are now buying expired domains based on the number of backlinks or the ranking of an expired domain, only to discover that these have mysteriously disappeared a month or so later. Is it that the search engines have black listed the domain, or could you have done something at the beginning to prevent this from happening?

There are several checks you should do before purchasing an expiring domain, to avoid losing all the value after you have purchased your expired domain.

One of the main reasons that an expiring domain can look attractive is the number of backlinks, but a word of warning - sometimes search engines can treat one domain exactly the same as another - same ranking, same backlinks, same everything. This can come about as a website based on a domain name can have several other domains pointing to this same website. For example, domain.com could be the main domain name, but domain.net may also be pointing at the same website. Depending on how the domains have been set up, some search engines will treat domain.net exactly the same as domain.com.

One way of finding the number of backlinks to a domain is by doing a search on a search engine using the word "link" followed by a colon and then the URL of the domain, eg link:http://www.domain.com

Using our example, if you were to check domain.net and found it had thousands of backlinks and soon to expire, then you may be tempted to purchase the domain name the second it expired. Once purchased you would then go about setting up a website on your new domain expecting the visitors to be pouring in. At this point, domain.net no longer points to domain.com and so any affiliation to domain.com stops. The search engines will no longer treat domain.net the same as domain.com, but will now treat it on its own merits. This normally results on zero backlinks and no ranking. You will have lost all the benefits you hoped to gain from the domain name and need to start promoting your new website from scratch.

To avoid this from happening, after you have done your link search on a search engine you should then visit several of the websites that are listed as linking to your domain and check the links are actually there. You will find that in a surprising high number of cases the links you expect to find are simply missing from these webpages. If this is the case with your chosen domain, then I would suggest ignoring this domain name and finding another.

I have conducted several experiments on expired domains. If the backlinks were real and existed prior to the domain expiring, then in most cases the domain would retain its original ranking. If the backlinks were fake then within a few weeks of obtaining the expired domain all rankings were lost.

There are several services on the internet that can provide data on expiring domains, and some of these include checking to see if search engine rankings are real or fake.

Website Design Tips – How To Reduce Website Load Time

An important aspect of website design is to reduce web page load time to the lowest possible. A slim trim website design is in some ways like an attractive athletic woman, so let us call this article "A website weight loss programme" that will help you make your web pages load much faster.

Why is it so important to reduce website load time?

A website has global reach but Internet connection speeds in various countries are not the same. A lot of dial-ups and slow broadband connections still exist. Recently published research has revealed that unless massive amounts are spent on improving Internet infrastructure, the average global connection speed may show a dip by 2010. Even for those who do have high-speed connections, the total number of relevant websites on the Internet is growing fast. This directly translates into less time spent by the viewer per web page. Generally speaking, patience is a rare commodity in today's world of reducing resource-to-consumption ratios. Do you want to neglect a large proportion of potential worldwide customers just because your web page load time is slow? If not, then follow the steps below to reduce website load time.

Women usually work on trimming the hips, shaping legs and removing cellulites in various places. Similarly, I have classified below "website weight loss programme" into three 'broad' categories: Graphics, Code and Other Factors. Please note that you should meticulously follow as many steps as you can to take the redundant fat out of your website design and reduce "website loading time" to a bare minimum.

WEBSITE WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMME

A. TRIM the Graphics (Slim hips:-)

1. Avoid Graphic Heavy or Complicated Web Design

Website designs that use many images (especially those with special effects) generally take a long time to load. What if a good looking website keeps loosing valuable visitors just because its web pages take too much loading time? Try to be discrete and use less number of images / graphics while maintaining the look and impact of the website design. Remember that text links are easily read by search engines and load faster than graphic buttons. Sometimes it is also possible to move large images from an important page to a section like "Gallery" to reduce web page load time.

2. Use Only Optimized Images

Optimize each image in editing software like Photoshop. There are different image formats like GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF etc., so try to save images in the appropriate format. As a rule-of-thumb, GIF is more suitable for uniform color images and JPEG for real world scenes. GIF saved at 256 colors should be reduced (as much as possible) to 128, 64 or 32 colors without comprising image quality. To reduce website load time JPEGs should be saved in the lowest quality possible without spoiling picture impact. You can also use PNG if you are sure that your users are using newer browsers.

3. Specify Image Dimensions

While inserting images in HTML always mention height and width attributes. This helps the web browser to know the image size before loading it. The browser will then reserve the area for the images while rest of the web page design continues to load, thereby reducing website loading time. Do not use the height and width tags for image size reduction.

4. Pre-load Your Images

You can pre-load some heavy images of the next pages (that can be reached by clicking on links within the current page) by defining them at the footer of the current web page. For example, img src="nextimage" height ="1" width="1" inserts a 1x1 pixel image in the footer that is read by the browser when the code above it has been read. Thereafter, while your visitor is viewing your main page, images of the next page will continue to download to the viewer's PC in the background and will reduce subsequent web page load times. This is not recommended for direct Adwords landing pages because Google has recently announced that high web page load time will negatively impact the landing page quality score.

5. Optimize Flash Files

Animating important stuff can make an impact on the visitor. If possible, avoid animated GIF images in website designs; instead use Flash with discretion. Always use optimized flash files. There are so many ways to reduce Flash loading time that I will be covering this in a separate article.

B. TRIM the Code (Shapely legs ;-)

1. Remove Useless Code:

While using an HTML generator, some extra or empty tags get inserted in the code, for e.g. breaking spaces, block quotes, unnecessary extra space, blank lines etc. Even if you hand-code HTML, always manually check your website design code and remove the empty or unnecessary HTML tags. Use appropriate DOCTYPE and close all HTML markup elements. The browser will then have less work to do matching elements. Clean coding of a web page will not only reduce website load time but also increases your text-to-code ratio and search engine spiders do not have to spend time deciphering irrelevant stuff.

2. Use of Shorthand External CSS

CSS helps make your website design code compact as well as clean and its proper usage helps reduce website loading time. Define common font styles, images etc. (used in a set of web pages) in one single external CSS. By doing this, you will not have to insert the same tags again and again on different pages - just call the CSS and apply that particular class. With all your repetitive stuff defined in the CSS file, the browser won't have to read each single tag all over again. Always use External CSS file and remember to remove extra, unused styles from it.

Use smaller class names and shorthand CSS instead of putting each CSS attribute in its own line.

For example:

"body{

background: url("image.jpg");

background-color: #cccccc;

background-repeat: repeat-x;

}"

Above code can be written as below when using shorthand CSS:

"body {

background: #cccccc url('image.jpg') repeat-x;

}"

A properly created small external CSS file will substantially reduce website load time.

3. Use External JavaScript

If you must use JavaScript, merge small common JavaScript files into a single external file and then (for newer browsers) you may compress it. This will reduce website loading time and you don't have to write the script on each web page - the web browser has this file in its cache and won't have to download it each time another web page loads.

4. For Table Based Website Design

Avoid unnecessary nested and full-page tables. If you insert a table inside another table, it increases web page load time because the browser has to read the content located in the innermost table. Avoid unnecessary nested tables, instead divide your page into different sections like header, body, footer etc. according to your layout and use a different table for each section. Your browser will be able to load your web page a bit faster.

5. Use Table-less Website Designs

Every time when a website is opened, the browser has to first scan tables and then load the content of the page which increases the website loading time. Using CSS and DIV tags you can avoid tables altogether and reduce website loading time substantially.

C. OTHER factors that reduce website load time (remove the cellulites:-)

1. Host on a high-end server with fast connectivity to decrease website loading time.

2. If you have a database driven website, it is faster and more secure to place your content on one server and your database on another. Consider SSI for common page elements, AJAX for page refreshes and Jar compressed files that load faster into the temp.

3. Avoid background music files and if it is very necessary to use them then use highly compressed music file formats. Avoid having much stuff on your website loading from other websites and reduce the number of HTTP requests.

4. Adding a slash at the end of a link like domain.com/contact informs the server that this is a directory page and it does not have to waste time working out what kind of file exists at that address.

5. Using fewer redirects, Iframes, PhP and database queries also helps reduce website loading time.

Remember that quality websites offer a lot of fresh content. When you add new pages, do not forget to apply the above tips to reduce website load time.

For example, if your website has information about fish tanks, a reciprocal link exchange with a website selling fish food would be advantageous to both parties. In fact, there are many websites online dedicated to facilitating link exchanges by bringing related and receptive website owners together.

Link exchanges between non-related websites (e.g. software and gardening websites) are considered lower quality inbound links. While they still count as an inbound link, they don't assist in your marketing strategy to the same degree because the traffic and content has nothing to do with your site. And having unrelated content on your website doesn't help either. It's better to stay focused on your topic and target that type of traffic.

One-Way Link Requests

Reciprocal link exchanges are helpful but can be seen as a lower quality recommendation since both websites link to each other based on an agreement to do so rather than to provide quality content and helpful resources for the traffic on their site. In contrast, one-way links, where websites link to you without you having to link back to them, are some of the best types of inbound links. Why would anyone want to do this, you ask, when they don't get a link out of it? Linking to your related, unique quality content helps their visitors find information and makes their website a trusted resource. You get a quality inbound link and recommendation, and they help their visitors find quality content.

Email other websites and explain how your site could be beneficial to their traffic. Tell them what you offer and ask them to tell their visitors about you. Of course, the more established you are and the more unique content you have on your website, the easier it is to have people link to you. In most cases, you will find people linking to you without having to ask them. Focus on making your site unique and you will get one-way links.

Directory Submission

There are thousands upon thousands of directories on the Internet listing websites according to category. Some directories are specific to a certain niche such as business, real estate, or web design while some target a specific geographic location, gender, or age group. Directories give you a free inbound link to your site and because most are already fully indexed by search engines, can provide quick results (depending on directory approval time). When Google is spidering the pages of the directory, your website link will be followed to your site and indexed as well. While some directories require a reciprocal link back to the directory, others do not.

Adding your website to quality directories is advantageous because your website will be listed amongst other related websites in a category also related to your website. When directory visitors are looking for a specific topic and perusing the category, your website will be listed, helping to build your brand recognition and traffic. Look for popular directories and choose the category most relevant to your website. Page rank or Alexa rank can be good indicators of how established the directory is and therefore the quality of an inbound link.

Article Submission

When I first started Internet marketing some years ago I knew nothing about writing articles and didn't consider myself an author. I soon learned first hand how effective articles can be in establishing quality inbound links and targeted traffic. There are numerous article websites online that will accept unique content articles written by you. Similar to directories, they will list your articles according to your chosen category. Your article should be about a topic relevant to your website. Always be sure to include your personal signature at the bottom of the article telling readers about you and why you're qualified to write about the topic. Include your website URL for where to go for more information. This is crucial because this is your inbound link!

Articles work because they establish you as a trusted and knowledgeable source in your industry. Readers who find your articles interesting will bookmark them, tell their friends, and click your website link in your signature. Furthermore, articles become free content available to other websites who pick up your article and put it on their own related website (still with your signature credit at the bottom). One article can be spread across the Internet on multiple websites all leading back to your website as the originating source. These are multiple free quality inbound links that are relatively easy to create from one article. Articles are easy - just write about what you know and submit on a regular basis.

Press Releases

If something happens in your business, why not tell others of the change? Press release websites allow you to write a latest news item about your website or business and upload it with your website link. It will be picked up by other websites similar to the way articles are. Say you offer a new product or service, or change your name, simply write a press release about the news item and upload it free to any of the press release websites online. I find press releases are more for larger websites and businesses that have a wider audience who would care about the news. That's not to say that a smaller site can't create inbound links with press releases. It just depends on how much news you have. For personal or affiliate websites, I would recommend sticking with writing articles.

Every personal, business, and affiliate website needs to create quality inbound links to increase search engine rankings, traffic, and brand recognition. By using any combination of the free methods I discussed, you will be establishing a solid, long-term, and proven marketing strategy for website promotion that's easy enough for anyone to do from home. This is the last part of a three part series dealing with guidelines in how to plan, present and develop your company's website. In part one we explored the importance of having a professional website to represent your company online. In part two, we identified the quality approach of planning your company's website.

Now in our last part of these series we will take a quick look into the website design, development & marketing aspects and your company's image.

Company Brand

First step when looking into website design, development and marketing is concentrating in your company's logo. Your company logo should be the focus point of your website - remember: it is all about your company. Your marketing material should all look similar - business cards, printing materials, online PDF's - all should deliver the same message and have the same connection.

The mainly objective of your website design, development and marketing is to connect prospective clients with your company. They are all alone there, without any sales person to guide them and explain how the company works so make sure it can stands on its own merit. Your website must present your company well as there will be no human factor once a visitor comes around.

Search Engine and User Friendly

A website is not a brochure! When concentrating in your company's website design, development and marketing, all materials should be created accordingly with online marketing. The copyright for a website is not the same as used on your printing materials, images have a special format and size, colors should be wisely used, and navigation should be easy with absolutely no dead ends.

Various Aspects to Domain Management

Domain registration is generally very easy. In fact you can simply contact your local domain registrar and give your details like name, address, contact info and of course the name of the domain you want registered and your domain gets registered. Alternatively you can simply go online to your domain registrar's website and if the facility is provided just fill out a simply online registration form with your name and other details and submit to register your domain. It's as simple as that.

The problem arrives generally for most of us after the domain has been registered. We keep hearing all these words like name servers, domain pointing and forwarding, domain locking and other things which make it all a nightmare. But it is not as bad as you think. Domain management, once you understand the various aspects to it, is actually a very simply task. We look at some of the aspects in domain registration and management which you might have to go through while setting up your website.

Name Servers

Name servers are probably the most common words used after you have registered a domain. Your hosting company will tell you to change your domain name servers to their address in order for your web hosting service to function properly. So what are name servers?

To put it in simple language, name servers are the name of your server. It basically tells a domain where your website files are located so every time someone types your domain name in their browsers, the domain exactly knows where to go to show your website files - your homepage etc.

Name Servers generally look like this:

Assuming you are hosting with xyz hosting company then your name servers should generally be:

NS1.XYZ.COM

NS2.XYZ.COM

Note the NS could be followed by 3 or 4 depending on your hosting company. Your hosting company will generally provide their name servers to you when you register with them.

Domain Forwarding / Domain Redirect

Domain forwarding or also know as Domain redirect means if you have multiple domains registered and you want one of your domains to quite simply point to another domain that you have as an active website.

This technique allows you to have a single website be available under multiple domains. For example you can register your domain in both .com and .net format and then make the .net domain address forward to your .com website. That way you don't have to spend on having two different websites hosted for each of your domain extensions.

Domain Locking

This is quite new to the world of domains but is a very important one and you should always be aware of your domain's status - i.e. whether it is locked or unlocked.

Now, how does domain locking make a difference to you? Firstly if your domain is not locked, then malicious software or hackers have the ability to shift the domain in to their name or shift the domain's name servers on to their web site which could cause lot of embarrassment to you. Not just that in some cases, hackers can pull the domain from your domain registrar to theirs, giving them full control of your domain.

In general you should always make sure your domain is in locked status. Of course when you need to change the domain's name servers etc for your own use then you can unlock a domain. But always make sure moment your work is done and the name servers or any other information you are trying to change has been completed, immediately lock your domain. If you can't lock or unlock your domain, please contact your domain registrar regarding this.
